FAQ

  • How is the weather in Shenzhen?
Shenzhen is located in the subtropical climate zone, so it is humid and warm in the summer and very mild in the winter.
  • Is Shenzhen very expensive?
Shenzhen is comparable to other mega-cities like Beijing or Shanghai. Real estate prices and rents are relatively high by Chinese standards, but public transportation, food, and recreational activities are affordable even on a small budget. Examples: A lunch = 2-3€, half an hour on the metro: 0.60€
  • Do many people speak English?
Despite its proximity to the very international city of Hong Kong, relatively few people in Shenzhen speak fluent English. In everyday situations, it is helpful to know some Chinese words or at least have a good translation app ready.
  • Is the internet blocked in China?
The simple answer is: Yes, partially! However, there is a way to use the internet without restrictions. Simply download a VPN app via a browser or the App Store. There are various options, some free and some paid. For app recommendations, you can ask us.
  • Is there smog in Shenzhen?
Smog is a problem in all major Chinese cities. Shenzhen itself is not heavily affected by smog. Although the smog level in the city has increased in recent years, the pollution levels are significantly lower than in Beijing and Shanghai. Shenzhen is considered one of the cleanest and greenest major cities in China (for example, the public transportation system is 100% electric).

What brought me to China? Wanderlust.

For someone who wants to go abroad and isn’t held back by prejudices, culture shocks, or language barriers, I can only recommend China. You meet people from all over the world and gain a unique insight not only into Chinese culture but also into the diverse cultures of the other program participants. China is such an exciting and contrasting country; it’s never boring. If you approach it with an open mind, your time here will be a unique experience that you will never forget for the rest of your life.

During my stay, I had communication difficulties with my host family.

Although I struggled to build a closer relationship with my host child and left the program earlier than planned, the consistent support from the coordinator ensured that I still had a great experience during my time in China. The program allowed me to immerse myself in a multifaceted and fascinating culture, which I continue to be passionate about even after my stay. I was also fortunate to meet people from all over the world, form meaningful friendships, and find a second home in Shenzhen.
